While skin care has been carried out for millennia, the people then did not have the choice of herbal or synthetic products. The use of synthetic products was something that was bound to occur when chemists started experimenting and mass production became available. Many of the skin care recipes have been lost and some populations around the world do not even know what these products are anymore.
Perhaps it is our fast paced lives and the ease with which we can purchase just about any synthetically produced item that has helped with the decrease in using natural preparations. Large skin care manufacturers have jumped on the bandwagon that has come about in all things natural but their herbal preparations have to be mixed with some kind of preservative if they are to last which means they are not as good as home made ones.
The true natural, herbal market is not dead though and a growing number of traditionalists have started up herbal skin care production to feed the desire of many people to have real, natural products. There isn’t likely to be a revolution against the cheaper mass produced herbal skin care products in the future but just what are these products exactly.
Almost everyone has heard of aloe vera but did you know is an excellent skin moisturizer and can treat sunburn, cuts and other skin problems? If you have ever wondered why tea has other herbal additives like dandelion, chamomile, lime flowers and rosemary then it is because they are cleansers and often work better when they are combined with other herbs.
Antiseptics are another important part of Herbal skin care and the likes of lavender, marigold, thyme and fennel are good examples of herbs that are known to possess antiseptic properties (lavender water and rose water also form good toners). Even tea can be used to help treat skin that has been damaged by to much UV radiation when formulated into a herbal skin care product.
Oils prepared from herbal extracts present another means of herbal skin care like tea tree oil, Lavender oil, borage oil and primrose oil which are some of the more popular oils used in herbal skin care. Even skin complaints such as eczema and psoriasis can use herbal oils to relieve the discomfort as well as others that are used in bath products because they re-hydrate the skin.
Although it is not something that is mentioned very often but herbal skin care products rarely have any adverse effects on the user and as you can produce them at home, they are very attractive to people trying to avoid anything synthetic. Despite the apparent love for all things herbal, whether mass produced or not, there are occasions when a synthetic skin care preparation may be better than a herbal one.
We all need to look after our skin by whatever means we can as it is the main barrier against disease and takes a great deal of punishment in the modern climate we all live in.
