Sometimes the problems that come along with migraines can be so severe that they interrupt daily life. Fortunately, headache clinics across the country can offer help. Although the vast majority of headaches are transitory and minor problems, some portions of the population suffer from headaches that strike so frequently and so painfully that their lives are interrupted. In these cases, preventive measures should be undertaken as much as possible. Headache Clinics can be a effective treatment of the problem and can seriously mitigate the issue and perhaps even completely relieve it.

The medical community has done significant research, leading to a three part categorization of headaches. Primary headaches are the most common kind of headache, and they are very rarely life threatening. Despite sometimes severe pain, over the counter medicine is usually effective. Such medications are usually enough to mitigate the pain significantly. Primary headaches are typically caused when tension or stress makes the muscles around the skull contract painfully, introducing too much pressure.

Problems requiring treatment at headache clinics are most likely related to cluster or secondary headaches. These serious headaches can occur seemingly at any time, causing severe pain in the sufferer. Cluster headaches come about in groupings, with patients sometimes going a year or more with no symptoms. A cluster headache can be identified by a runny nose or eyes, and severe pain behind the eye region. In these cases, treatment should be sought as soon as possible. Secondary headaches can be indicative of more serious issues in the brain. These kinds of problems should be treated at headache clinics. Although relieving pain with these varieties of headache can be difficult, there are medications designed to provide relief under these circumstances.

It is also very important that the root cause of a secondary headache be promptly identified. A secondary headache usually signifies some kind of neurological issue, and it is vital that these issues be dealt with as soon as possible at headache clinics, or by another specialist. Specialists at headache clinics like the Mayo Clinic are very experienced with headache issues and can provide relief. A Headache Clinic can be found around the world, and are very much worth visiting if chronic pain has inhibited daily life. As chronic headaches can also be a symptom of other issues, it’s vital that specialized treatment be sought.

Could someone use yoga for weight loss? They definitely could. It’s widely believed that yoga is just stretching, but you should try attending a class at your gym and see what you can find out about yoga as exercise. Such a class could use up the same number of calories as another more cardio-focused exercise.

You are doing resistance exercise when you do yoga, believe it or not. You may picture weight lifting when you think of resistance training. you are actually picking up your own body weight and this can be a good workout. You can strengthen your muscles with this type of exercise in the same way that could happen with other resistance activity.

Positions that are typically used in other exercise training activities have similarities with different yoga poses. Squats, push-ups and lunges are some of the actions you find in yoga poses. Yoga can be less tedious because these poses are different from what we’re used to doing in conventional exercise. Yoga can be considered more artful. When you perform yoga poses in front of the mirror, you can really love the beauty of your body that you see reflected.

Yoga can be a helpful aid to weight loss in that it works subtly in the mind as well as physically. As a way to begin your day, you can find some peace of mind that will cut down on your need for ineffective coping techniques. That is, the “emotional eating” that some people do. Whenever one is eating for reasons other than hunger, there is an issue to address.

If you eat only from real hunger, overall intake of calories will result. This will mean weight loss automatically. Yoga can relieve mental stress while you are practicing. Hopefully this skill will transfer to you everyday life experiences.

You can get positive weight loss results from just a few days of yoga a week. Very positive physical outcomes are possible from yoga. Although it may not strike you as the type of activity that can really change your body, you could be pleasantly surprised. Contrary to what you might believe, you don’t have to despise exercise for it to really work for you. Your body need not be tormented for positive results. Being kind and gentle to it can work even better.

Is There a Diet That Will Help Me Lose 10 Pounds in 3 Days?

Filed Under (health) by Meg Norman on 31-05-2009

Tagged Under : , ,

by Meg Norman

Lots of people need to lose weight, and lots of them are always on the look out for diets that work. It’s not really difficult to find diets that work, but finding a diet you can stick to is the problem. The diet industry is very large. With books, diet food programs, trainers and nutritionists, spas, and all the other elements of the and diet industry a lot of loot, over 46.8 billion dollars in 2005, was made not from people becoming healthy or losing weight, but rather from people attempting to become healthy or lose weight.

Because the money comes from repeat business, the focus is surely on the ping-pong reality of un-healthy living followed by short stints of diets and programs.

So you want a diet that delivers? Here’s one. Combine limiting caloric intake to 1000 calories a day with at least 30 minutes of exercise at least 5 times a week. It’s a given you’ll drop pounds. But there are two issues.

The first is that cravings are likely to foil the diet. Sooner or later, particularly after returning home from work outs, those 1000 calories won’t be enough to satisfy. First it’s a potato chip or slice of cake, then it’s an extra hot dog and the whole bag of chips, and then the diet is ended.

The second issue is what happens after the diet is over? What happens when the weight is gone? What, you’ll return to eating the same way you ate prior to the diet? Guess what, then the weight will return. Next beach season, or next time to wear that dress or tuxedo, or next vacation, or simply the next time you glance at a mirror on the way out of the shower it will be once again be diet time.

The best diet is one making a change to overall diet, permanently. A lifestyle change to healthier eating habits and more exercise is the best way to lose weight and keep off the unwanted pounds. The Sonoma Diet, created by Connie Guttersen, discusses ten power foods. The power foods are almonds, bell peppers, blueberries, broccoli, grapes, olive oil, spinach, strawberries, tomatoes and whole grains, combined with the diet of the Sonoma country, which includes Asian, Latin American and Mediterranean influences. The diet is full of real food, and real portions, combined into enjoyable dishes to help motivate someone to stay with it .

Want a diet that works? Shift the focus away from a short term diet to a long term style that’s part of an overall healthy and active lifestyle. That way you won’t put on the pounds in the first place.

Maximize Your Weight Loss At The Exercise Room Today

Filed Under (health) by Curtis T Fisher on 28-05-2009

by Curtis T Fisher

Most of us want to lose weight and get fit. Starting an exercise program or joining a gym always seems like a great first step but if you have ever spent any time at a gym you will notice that not everybody there makes progress on his or her fitness goals. It is not being at the gym that helps you to get fit but it is how hard you work at fitness that makes the difference.

You are going to have to break a sweat in order to see any real results from an exercise program. You will need to get your heart rate into the training zone and make sure that it stays there for a time. There have been some studies in the past that have shown that exercising for longer periods of time at a lower intensity will actually burn more fat than carbohydrates. However good that sounds unfortunately it does not translate to fat loss.

Burning fat as you exercise is important but not nearly as important as just burning calories. For example if you are doing a cardio workout and you keep your heart rate at the lower ranges for 60 minutes you may burn 350 calories but if you do that same 60 minute workout and add in some high intensity interval training or HIIT, you will burn closer to 750 to 1000 calories. So which one will help you lose the most weight?

HIIT or high intensity interval training is probably the most effective fat loss tool that you can add to your fitness program. The plan is to get your heart rate into the target zone and then maximize it for 30 to 60 seconds at a time, taking your heart rate up to 905 or more of your max, and then let it come back down and repeat. By doing HIIT you can actually cut your cardio workout time in half or more and still get better results for fat loss.

To get a rough idea of your maximum heart rate, take your age and subtract it from 220. Then take that number and multiply it by 60% and 80%. This would give you a target heart-training zone. This is the zone that you need to keep your heart rate at during your cardio training in order to see the best results.

If you want to lose weight and drop fat for the long term, you will need to gain muscle. That means that you should pump iron. Muscle is a biologically active tissue. That means that you will burn more calories just in the process of living if you have more muscle on your body. Fat is basically an inactive tissue and it will not help your body to burn any calories at all.

But the most important aspect to getting results at the gym and losing fat actually happens outside of the gym. It has been said that 6-pack abs are not built at the gym but rather they are built in the kitchen. Diet is the most important aspect of any fitness plan. You can exercise all day long but if you have a poor diet you will not see any results. If you want to get into shape, make sure that you are consuming healthy nutritious foods on a regular basis and that you are avoiding the junk and nutritionally empty foods that are so prevalent in our society.

You can achieve maximum fat loss by following these few fundamentals. Incorporate some challenging HIIT into your cardio routine, follow a good weight-training regimen and improve your diet. You will start seeing the results before you know it.

A Brief Outline Of Strokes

Filed Under (health) by Andrew Morris on 25-05-2009

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , , ,

by Andrew Morris

There are several terms to describe strokes including brain attack and cerebrovascular accident. The cause of a stroke is not enough blood getting to part of you brain just the same as in a heart attack.

The flow of blood to your brain has to be restored fairly quickly or the result will be permanent damage, as your brain needs blood constantly.

Like the heart your brain cannot repair dead areas so the immediate aim of stroke treatment is to reduce the damage. After a stroke your brain needs to make new pathways round the dead area and stroke rehabilitation is the best method.

You can have either an ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke.

Ischemic is medical speak for not enough blood. In an ischaemic stroke a clot blocks either the brains’ blood vessel or it is too narrow and not enough blood can flow. Blood cannot reach parts of the brain and the cells soon start to die.

Approximately 75% of strokes are caused by ischemia. There are of course risk factors and they include arterial disease, smoking, high blood pressure and irregular heartbeats, particularly atrial fibrillation.

Hemorrhagic is medical jargon for, if you like too much blood. Usually, hemorrhagic strokes are caused by a burst blood vessel leaking blood and damaging the immediate area. Roughly 25% of strokes are hemorrhagic and affect all ages from baby to pensioner.

Once again high blood pressure is a risk factor, along with aneurysms that burst and blood clotting disorders.

In the early stages after a stroke, which means the first few weeks, your initial problems may start to improve quite quickly. This is down to malfunctioning brain cells at the edge of the dead area recovering. This is great but can be a false dawn as for most people several months of rehab are looming.

For better recovery you need months of rehabilitation involving physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and writing and reading practice if necessary.

In the past it was considered impossible for the brain to bypass damaged areas. This is incorrect and it is now recognised that with the correct stimulation the brain can bypass damaged areas and make new pathways for information to flow.

This stimulation is information flowing into your brain and you using your brain. Stroke rehabilitation is a whole large topic in itself and being actively researched. Rehabilitation aims to maximise your recovery and stimulate the brain to make the new connections to bypass the damaged areas. Other parts of the brain can also take over control of different functions but NOT automatically. It needs lots of work.

Use the 3 Ps Strategy to Put the Kabosh on Emotional Eating

Filed Under (health) by Marna Goldstein Thall on 21-05-2009

Tagged Under : , , , , , ,

by Marna Goldstein Thall

Putting a kabosh to emotional eating is not the easiest thing in the world. Especially if youve connected up eating with love, joy, boredom, stress and procrastination.

Here are 3 exercises to end emotional eating:

1. Plan - Many people get in the habit of overeating. They find themselves coming home from work, going into the kitchen and sticking their head into the refrigerator looking for comfort. This situation can be avoided completely by creating a plan. My old plan was to come home at the end of the day, grab a bag of chips and throw myself down on the sofa. Once I started slimming down, I created a new plan - or a new picture in my mind. The new plan is to come home, throw myself down on the couch, wrap up in a blanket, watch the television and grab some tea. My new plan works for me and for my body.

2. Pause - Because it is true - when that craving hits you just can’t get in the middle of overeating. See how powerful the mind is? Your craving for food becomes so overpoweringly intense that getting in the middle is like trying to get in the middle of a monster. Set a timer and make it a game. Take your mind off it by doing something fun for five minutes. Studies have shown that if you can put it off for 5-15 minutes, your craving will likely pass.

3. Put it to Pen - At the top of a page of paper, write the title; “What Do I Need?” We are all aware that emotional eating has nothing to do with being hungry but is about something more. Just begin writing and let the words flow, don’t edit anything. While at first it may not make sense, you will find meaning about what you need. By writing it out, you may find a need for love, feeling out of control and stressed, or my favorite, want to relax and veg out. After having determined your need(s), put down how these needs can be met or how you can begin to meet those needs. For example, I want to relax and do nothing, so I will. But if I don’t have time at the moment, I’ll plan on doing nothing in a few hours in order to take care of my needs. Writing is also relaxing so it is the perfect way to distract you from emotional eating and find out how you really feel. Writing can also teach you the nature of your wants and needs to enable you to better take care of yourself and your needs.

So, there you have it in a nutshell, put together a plan and stick to it and you will be successful.

The pH Miracle Diet Basic Idea

Filed Under (health) by Jakk Williamsonn on 20-05-2009

Tagged Under : , , , ,

by Jakk Williamsonn

The latest diet to hit the world is the pH Miracle Diet. Different diets appear to come and go as noted by experts. The low-fat diets were all the rage in the 90s. In the 21st century however, low-carbohydrate diets such as The South Beach Diet, The Atkins Diet, Sugarbusters and Protein Power all experienced popularity. When someone fails to lose weight after trying one diet, they will move on to the next diet. That next new diet is the pH Miracle Diet.

Turning completely away from the high-protein, low-carbohydrate diets of the immediate past, the pH Miracle Diet offers a new appeal. Robert Young took nutrition to another level and created the pH Miracle Diet which is also known as the Young Diet or the Alkaline Diet. Holisitic doctors and nutritionists seem to agree that this new diet looks at what the body actually needs and is well-balanced.

The human body has a bit of an alkaline pH. We know our body works at this pH, so it makes sense that any foods we ingest should also be slightly alkaline. Right now, most Americans ingest acidic foods, such as animal proteins, sugars, caffiene and other processed and packaged food. The acidity of these foods tamper with our body’s pH and cause problems in our body. The acidic foods change how our bodies handle alkaline minerals according to those who support the pH Miracle Diet. These minerals are sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium and can all correlate to chronic diseases.

The pH Miracle Diet revolves around this concept. Nutritionist and nuts agree that anything a person puts into their body contributes to how a person feels and their overall . Mainstream doctors will certainly advocate a well balanced diet that includes fruit, vegetables, proteins and dairy products; but the pH Miracle diet goes beyond this. The diet stresses how ingesting acidic foods will eliminate essential minerals from your body. By adhering to the pH Miracle diet, a person is not eating dangerous foods that can wreak havoc on their bodies.

A lot of common foods are not allowed on the pH Miracle diet. Wheat and wheat products are a banned food prouct on the diet. You are probably wondering why as many, including the FDA, consider whole wheat products to be healthy. The pH Miracle Diet shows that grains such as wheat, oats, rice and millet are actually acidic and are harmful to our bodies. Only alkaline grains such as buckwheat, quinoa and spelt are encouraged.

Diary products and meats are also not allowed on the pH Miracle Diet. Goat milk is slightly alkaline so you can have some of that. To get protein you can eat beans, tofu, nuts and seeds. Except for mushrooms, most vegetables are alkaline and are promoted. Grapefruit, coconut, lemon and lime are the only vegetables allowed.

Positive changes to your are felt within the first few weeks, as noted by those who have begun the pH Miracle Diet. It is good for your body’s to cut down on processed foods and increase the amount of vegetables you eat, whichever diet you follow. In fact, critics of the pH Miracle Diet claim if you are already eating fresh foods and drinking and adequate amount of water then starting the diet will not benefit you further. But these critics are not looking at the aspect of balancing acid and alkaline levels.

There are no concrete scientific testing results on the pH Miracle Diet and many mainstream medical doctors do not see any advantages to the diet. The theories behind the diet are rooted in holisitic and Chinese medicine that have existed for hundreds of years. These principles are being tested right now at the Johns Hopkins’ University and by Dr. Neil Solomon of the United Nations. The results from these may cause critics of the pH Miracle Diet to eat their words.
